MacGyver movie director James Wan
New Line Cinema have signed Australian director James Wan to direct the MacGyver feature film. Wan is best know for directing the horror flick ‘Saw’ and has a list of other horror/thriller films to his credit.
Born in Malaysia, Wan grew up in Perth, Western Australia where he first discovered MacGyver and became a huge fan of the show. MacGyver creator Lee David Zlotoff said “his vision for the film sounds almost identical to mine so I’m excited.” This will mark Wans debut into the action/adventure genre with most of his movies being within the horror/thriller realm.
As well as directing, Wan is also an accomplished writer and producer.

Is this for real? Nothing against him as a person, but he’s a nobody as far as Hollywood and big feature films go. Totally wrong style, inexperienced and so far not successful. Why not just have LDZ direct then?

It’s also on Lee Zlotoff’s new http://macgyverglobal.com website along with a host of other news sites which are now starting to pick up the story.

Director of the movie ‘Saw’, in charge of new MacGyver film? It sure gives both promises and concerns. I definitely will see this movie even though I wish it starred RDA as title character, and I hope it will be a fresh start for next generation of viewers. Oh, and I wish the Murdoc was more like Moriarty from Sherlock (BBC TV series) and that he play important role in the franchise finale (I mean if the movie made it to sequels and/or new TV series).

Jonas, no studio will let LDZ direct a big feature…or anything for that matter. He doesn’t have the credentials or the chops, imho. He’s an old time tv writer. He and his buddies came up with a cool idea for a character, but ogther than that, Zlotoff’s not done much of substance, little to zero directing and unlike by us fans here, Mr Lee Zlotoff is not respected or sought after by the big players in Hollywood.

To say that the fans don’t like LDZ is complete nonsense. I’m not qualified to speak to your other comments, but from my dealings with him, he does seem to have a good network of people within the industry who are willing to work with him and help him do things which leads me to think your comment about not being respected is fairly inaccurate as well.

You misread my comment. I did not say he was unliked by fans…that would be the opposite of a “fan.” I said Zlotoff’s not well respected by Hollywood big players UNLIKE his fans. Don’t be so defensive, he’s just a dude – not a god. I was simply offering an explanation to another MacGyver follower as to LDZ’s not been pegged to direct. He’s a writer – not a director; a tv writer not feature writer…notice New Line wouldn’t let him write the feature? Some people act, some design sets, some write….everyone’s got their thing and few are fantastic at everything. It’s called being human and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I just watched the first Saw movie. Incredible. Simply incredible. I could just imagine MacGyver trying to escape one of Saw’s traps. That’d be epic. Still, I try not to keep my hopes too high because it will only end in disappointment. Good luck to Sir James.
