MacGyver Reboot Gets Green Light

The Hollywood Reporter is today reporting that CBS has given the MacGyver Reboot the green light for a pilot to be produced.

No new information has been provided yet, with news reports instead confirming the information we got back in Oct of last year. Henry Winkler will Exec produce along with Atomic Monster, James Wan’s production company, head of production Michael Clear. Wan will exec produce and direct the pilot with speculation that he will use this project to segue into Television.

Wan has had his eye on the MacGyver franchise for some time and was pipped to direct the now-defunct New Line Cinema feature movie and drew the ire of fans when he revealed his vision for MacGyver’s future.

The project originally had NCIS: LA executive producer R. Scott Gemmill attached as a writer, but now has a new script written by Paul Downs Colaizzo and will feature a 10 years younger, twentysomething, MacGyver as he gets recruited into a clandestine organization from the original series – flying in the face of the already established lore of the original series.

This will be the second attempt at re-capturing the MacGyver viewership. Warner Brothers tried to develop a Young MacGyver TV series which would follow MacGyver’s nephew as he joined his uncle’s former employer, the Phoenix Foundation, to put his inherited knack for improvisation to good use. The series went to pilot, but was never picked up and has drawn considerable criticism over the years for ignoring the original MacGyver’s lack of living relatives meaning he could not have had a nephew.
